Department:                       William G. Rohrer Memorial Library

Salary:                                 $11.7261 per hour

Schedule:                          Primarily  nights and weekends (occasional holiday);
                                             Schedule may change based on Library needs

Status:                               Permanent after completing 90-day working test period

Description of Duties

Under general supervision, primary duties include performing a variety of public service tasks, including but not limited to, discharging and charging library materials, computing and collecting fines, registering customers for library cards and programs, processing holds, answering general questions from the public, assisting customers in locating materials, shelving materials, emptying the book drop, assisting customers on the public computers and other related duties as required. May be scheduled at other branches.

Requirements:

Knowledge of basic arithmetic using whole numbers
Ability to perform extensive alphabetizing beyond the first letter of a word.
Ability to converse courteously in person and using other methods of communication
Ability to comprehend and follow written and/or oral one-or-two step instructions
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System and Basic Computer Skills a plus
Appointee may be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

As a Monitor a candidate may be asked to:

  • Cart and shelve Library materials.
  • Gather and shelve material that accumulates on book carts, tables, shelves, and study carrels.
  • Shelf reading (making sure that materials are in the correct order).
  • Empty the outdoor book drops including on weekends and holidays
  • Answer the phone and direct calls to the appropriate individuals
  • Fax materials to other libraries and to patrons.

At times, in order to perform assigned duties to this position, you may be asked to push a full book cart which can weigh up to 40lbs, twist, bend, kneel, reach, walk or stand for extended periods. May be scheduled at other branches.

Description of Duties

Under general supervision, primary duties include conducting, coordinating and supporting ESL program activities of the organization. Conducts recruitment, orientation and training of all ESL volunteer tutors and students.  Coordinates and conducts student assessments. Compiles and maintains reports on ESL tutors and students, provides guidance to tutors on methods and resources available.  Provides information to other agencies and individuals by telephone, through scheduled appointments and written correspondence regarding Literacy initiatives, programs and resources. Related duties as required. May be scheduled at  or be required to perform work at other locations.

Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience in 
community relations work involving the  promotion of local community resources or field work in a 
social service or public assistance program on a year for year basis.
