VOORHEES, NJ – Nov. 15, 2012 – The Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra will demonstrate the unique capabilities of their chosen instrument when they perform selections from classical music and more contemporary pieces at the William G. Rohrer Memorial Library of the Camden County Library System in Haddon Twp. on  Saturday, Dec. 1, 2 p.m.

Musical pieces will include several written specifically for accordion orchestra including Nordische Sonate by Gerhard Mohr, as well as a more contemporary medley of music from the popular musical “Grease.”

In advance of the main performance, children ages eight and older are welcome to attend a ‘see and touch’ presentation starting at 1:20 p.m. The group will also provide a display of current and historical instruments as part of its appearance.

The orchestra describes itself as an accordion ensemble that is devoted to performing music of great masters as well as ethnic, original, and popular compositions.  The ensemble achieves a symphonic sound by the use of multiple reeds registers and accordionists performing individual parts, much like a symphony orchestra.

The orchestra has a long history in Haddon Twp. and Westmont where it was first organized for serious musicians by Stanley Darrow and Roman Pawlowski in 1960. In 1976 then Mayor William G. Rohrer recognized the WPAO as the community orchestra of Haddon Township, New Jersey. It was subsequently recognized again as such in 1992.

Darrow serves as the director of the orchestra and selects many of the pieces for his fellow accordion artists.

The library is located on MacArthur Blvd. off Cuthbert Rd. Registration for the free event is required by calling 856-854-2752 or online at .
