Details:           Students from Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) are hosting a special “Reading Together” event to meet the parents of dozens of Camden children who regularly participate in CMSRU’s TutorTime program at the Riletta Cream Branch of the Camden County Library System.

“I commend the students from the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University for responding to a need in this community,” said Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Library System.  “They have not only come to Camden to attend school, they are also actively giving back to their community by volunteering their time as part of this tutoring program.”

Parents and their children are invited to celebrate the holidays and share a meal with the future physicians who serve as volunteer tutors in the three-day-a-week program at the library.

The event includes a free literacy workshop that promotes reading together as a family, and families will receive complimentary books courtesy of Dr. Judith Nadell of Voorhees, NJ, founder and owner of Townsend Press, literacy advocate, and sponsor of CSMRU’s TutorTime program.  The “Reading Together” event will culminate with a presentation of “certificates of achievement” to the youngsters in the program.

TutorTime was launched in 2013 by CMSRU student Brian McCauley as a service learning project.  McCauley visited the Ferry Avenue Branch of the Camden County Library looking for volunteer work, and saw firsthand the large number of children of all ages who frequented the library unaccompanied after school.

With the help of children’s librarian Lisa Whitley and other library staff, a special area was designated for a one day per week program where children could come for homework help.  McCauley collected supplies and healthy snacks to bring with him, and recruited several classmates to help work with the children.

Now, CMSRU students run TutorTime three days a week and provide tutoring and mentorship to nearly 50 grammar, middle and high school kids from Camden.

A generous donation from Dr. Nadell enabled TutorTime to purchase school supplies, arts and craft materials, and fun educational games.  Children are also provided with fresh fruit at every TutorTime session.

The Reading Together event is the first opportunity many of the TutorTime volunteers have had to meet the parents of the children with whom they’ve been working.  It’s also a chance to promote literacy and the extraordinary impact that reading together as a family can have on a child.
