Programs offer intensive support, motivation for aspiring and veteran writers

VOORHEES, NJ – October 25, 2012 – The Gloucester Twp. Branch of the Camden County Library System is encouraging customers and aspiring writers to participate in National Novel Writing Month with three sessions of a special program.

Now in its 14th year, the goal of the national program is to help authors write a novel of at least 50,000 words from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30.  The Gloucester Twp. Library will offer an informational session on Thursday, Nov. 1, 8 - 8:30 p.m. to help those new to the program get registered on the national website at where writers can actually write, save and track their progress with the goal of writing a novel within a month’s time.

The library will then host two Write-Ins for participants on Thursdays Nov. 15 and Nov. 29, 6 – 8:45 p.m. Gloucester Twp. Librarian Alana Phelan who is organizing the program explained, "Aspiring writers will work furiously to hit the 50,000-word goal in the 30 days allotted.  They can use the Write-Ins to motivate themselves to reach this goal, while socializing and networking with other writers in the area."

Phelan who has herself registered and participated as a writer in the program for the past four years noted, “Beginners and pros look to NaNoWriMo, as they affectionately call it, to be the creative kick in the pants needed to prioritize writing in their lives.”

She recommends the website, hosted by the nonprofit Office of Letters and Light, for offering tips, tricks, word counters and forums that connect participants globally as well as locally.

“The library is partnering with the NaNoWriMo South Jersey municipal liaisons to provide a writer-friendly space for all those participating in National Novel Writing Month,” said Phelan.

She noted if the program at the library is well attended this year, Gloucester Twp. and other branches of the library system may offer it again next year. Registration for the program is available by calling 856-228-0022 or online at .
