Camden County Library Offers Summer Reading Themes and Programs

Different themes and scores of programs for kids and teens

[The Camden County Library’s youngest customers can take their stuffed toys to summer camp as part of the summer reading program offered at all eight branch libraries.]


VOORHEES, NJ – June 7, 2012 – The Camden County Library System is pleased to announce a full schedule of 60 program events to celebrate and engage children and teens in its summer reading programs at eight different branches.

Participants can earn points by logging their time spent reading to earn chances for prizes they can win. Registration for any program is available at one of the local branch libraries or on the library system’s website at

“We’re very pleased to offer an extensive summer program for our younger customers. Summer reading is a great way to reinforce and maintain reading skills over summer vacation,” points out Camden County Library Director Linda Devlin. “I encourage children and their parents to check out what we have to offer and visit their local library branch often this summer.”

Dream Big – Read’ Children’s theme

Dream Big – Read is the theme for children across the state and here in Camden County this summer. The library has a big line up of programs to meet the theme. All require the use of imagination and the ability to dream.

The Magical Adventures of the Dream Weaver

Grades Pre-K - 5

Local author and storyteller, Don Dougherty of Classroom Adventure Stories, will visit this summer and perform his latest story, "The Magical Adventures of the Dream Weaver".  Children who arrive early may have the chance to become one of the ‘Stars of the Story’.  This program will be offered at the following branch locations, dates and times vary.

Mr. Malcolm Presents... Life it but a Dream

All ages

A perennial favorite at the library, Mr. Malcolm reminds us that life is but a dream through his interactive stories. This program will be offered at the following branch locations, dates and times vary.

Sciencetellers: Dragons & Dreams

Grades K-5

With castles, kings, a dragon keeper, an Ice Sorceress, the Horn of Fire, two villagers and a daring journey to save the entire kingdom, enjoy this spectacular adventure. Learn about the science of fire and ice through a tale of Dragons & Dreams using experiments with flash paper, exploding bottles, "cool" dry ice and much more. This program will be offered at the following branch locations, dates and times vary.

Cosmic Space

Grades K-5

Mad Science presents a voyage for inquiring minds interested in discovering Space. Boldly go where young space fanatics love to go - space suits not required. Participants will return from their mission with their own piece of the skies! This program will be offered at the following branch locations, dates and times vary.

Stuffed Animal Camp Out!


The library has offered sleepovers for the stuffed animals of our youngest customers before, but now it’s time the toys enjoy a summer camp at their local branch. There will be stories, songs and crafts. This program will be offered at the following branch locations - ages, dates and times vary.

‘Own the Night’ Teen and ‘Tween Theme

Camden County Library is joining others across New Jersey in offering summer reading and programs related to the theme of ‘Own the Night’ for teen and ‘tween customers.

Phil McNulty's Comic Book Workshop
Illustrator Phil McNulty teaches how to tell a story without words. Compose a comic book using elements of art like design and storytelling to take the written script into the final page.

Use Gmail documents to collectively collaborate on writing a scary story and drawing animals of night.  No one knows what the final product will turn out to be.

Wreck Your Journal

Journals will be the object of attention this night as participants explore their hidden creativity through word and art

T-shirts will be the object of attention. Turn old into new again.  Save an old t-shirt from the trash and give it a second life as something useful and artsy that will carry your stuff to the beach, school or soccer practice.

Third Annual Teen Film Festival Night at the Voorhees Library

Watch our teen-submitted movies in The Corner at this Red Carpet Event.  Meet the teen directors and watch as their films are showcased and judged by our panel. The Magic of Chad Juros

Chad is a two-time cancer survivor and has been a professional award-winning magician since the age of seven. He started Spread the Magic Foundation for children with cancer.Chad's performances feature classic magical illusions as well as juggling. Henna for Teens

In this hands-on workshop learn about mehndi (henna) art, how to draw traditional Indian motifs, and the technique of applying henna. Parental permission required, as henna can remain on the skin from 1-2 weeks.
