Freading is a downloadable ebook service from Library Ideas,with over 22,000 titles and more being added each day. All the titles are always available, so there are no waiting lists!  Read the books on your computer or on a portable device.   The books are in epub and pdf format. Library card holders receive 5 tokens each week to be used to check out one to five titles - the most popular books are worth more tokens.  Books may be checked out for two weeks, and may be renewed once.

  There is a mobile app available for Apple devices, Kindle Fires, and Droids. The mobile app works with most Android tablets and phones, Apple iPhones and iPads, and the Kindle Fire.  At this time the app works best on tablets.  You must use the Freading website to select and download titles, and it is not optimized for smaller mobile devices, so you will need to scroll and side scroll to see the different features of the site.

1. For direct downloading off the site you can use a PC or Mac.  With our app, you can use the iPhone or iPad.  With our app, you can use most Android tablets and phones.  Tablets we have tested include Samsung Galaxy, Sony, Toshiba, Acer, Asus and Xoom. 
2. For transfer of an eBook via a computer and Adobe Digital Editions, you can use the Nook devices, the Sony reader and the Kobo reader.  We suspect there are more compatible ereaders.
3. Freading eBooks are available via the Kindle Fire by a special procedure, but not other Kindles.
4. At the moment, Freading eBooks are only viewable on Nook tablets via transfer.

The First Time You Use Freading 1. When you go to Camden County Library's Freading page for the first time you will need to agree to Freading's License Agreement by clicking on the "Accept" button.
2. A popup window will appear with brief instructions on using Freading.  This page will appear each time you visit unless you click on the link at the top right to "Always skip this page."  If you want to see the instructions again click on the link at the top left to "Continue on to Freading."
3. Install Adobe Digital Editions (If you already have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, Skip to Step 4.) a. Before you begin using Freading you will need to have Adobe Digital Editions on your computer.  If you do not have Adobe Digital Editions you can download it from the Freading homepage by clicking on the brown install icon under "Adobe Digital Editions Installer" at the right side of the page.
b.  The box and button will change - you will be given a chance to cancel the installation.  Click on the "Install" button.
c.Click on "Yes" when the Installer box comes up.  Your computer may also pop up a warning message about unknown applications.  Click on yes to continue.
d. Choose the shortcuts you want by checking or unchecking the boxes in the next popup box.  Click on "Next."
e. Your computer will automatically choose a folder to install Adobe Digital Editions into.  You can change the location if you want.  Then click the "Install" button.
4.Very important!  Before you begin searching for books, you need to launch Adobe Digital Editions. In the box at the right side that says "Start here to read books" click on the "Launch" button.  Adobe Digital Editions will open on your computer.
5. Searching for a Title There are several ways to search the Freading site. a.  You can browse top downloads, new arrivals, or by category, by clicking on the tabs near the top of the screen.
b. You can do a keyword search for title, author, category or publisher by using the search box at the top right of the page and changing the dropdown menu to the right of the search box.
c. The books are worth either 1, 2, or 4 tokens.  Newest and most popular books are worth the most tokens. The number of tokens each book is worth can be found in the blue circle at the top left corner of the book jacket.    You may check out books worth a total of 5 tokens each week.
c. When you have found a book you want, click on "Login to Download" directly underneath the book jacket.
d. Log in with your library card number ( no spaces) and Pin.
e. After logging in you will be brought back to the same page.  Click on the download link directly below the book jacket.  Note:  Below the download link you will see how many tokens the book is worth.
f. You will be asked whether you want to open or save.  Choose "Open."
g. Adobe Digital Editions will appear and your book will download.
h. You can use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer titles to your Nook, Sony Reader, or Kobo Reader.  With Digital Editions opened on the computer, connect your device to the computer with the USB cable that came with the device. Once connected, Digital Editions will recognize the device and ask if you would like to authorize the device with the same Adobe ID as the computer. Select "Yes", and you will see the device appear as a bookshelf in Digital Editions. When you download a book from Freading and open it in Digital Editions you will be able to drag it onto the device.
Renewing a Title You may renew a checked out book one time for 14 days, even if the title has already expired.  Go to the Freading website: http://camdencountylibrary.freading.com .  Log in to the site with your library card and Pin by clicking on "Login" in the top right corner.
After you have logged in click on "My Downloads" in the top right corner.
You will see a list of your recent downloads.  Click on the link of the title you want to renew.
The number of tokens needed to download will show as 0.  Click on the Download link and the book will re-download.  No tokens will be deducted from your account.
